For several years before the pandemic, my eyes would occasionally be drawn towards the ‘trending’ tab on twitter; there you would see, with rhythmical precision, inept hashtag campaigns with names like ‘#LiarMay’ or ‘#SocialistSunday’ pop up every few days. Often, in the mainstream media, you see the expressions like ‘Britain isn’t twitter’ and we must assume it is to these people that mainstream pundits refer when they say ‘twitter’. What’s funny is that these people are not whom most active twitter users think of when they say ‘twitter’; these people, on twitter, are ‘normies’. However, they are emphatically not ‘normal’ either; actually ‘normal’ people don’t use twitter, its a website for outliers by definition: so, I wondered, with this train of logic running through my head, who are they? Who are the people both average enough to use hashtags but weird enough to post in the first place?
