Almost all media containing swear words, racism, sex or “gore” (viz. blood) were strictly forbidden to me from foetusdom to the age of 12. After this point, I got access to the internet and could basically do what I wanted. I think this is a much better arrangement than the moddish ‘ban mobile telephones but hook up the Gogglebox’ but whatever. The one exception to this rule was, bizarrely, the films of Sacha Baron Cohen. For whatever reason, my various guardians believed that while South Park, the Call of Duty games and Alien vs. Predator were trading names of Salo: 120 days of Sodom – Mr. Baron-Cohen produced whimsical little comedies in the model of Fawlty Towers. It was implied the people made fun of in Baron-Cohen flicks, in a rare exception to what was then called ‘Political Correctness’ basically deserved their mockery. Many have noted that Borat is not actually about Kazakhs but is in fact a collection of Jewish stereotypes about Russians and Poles. Bruno is about Germans. I would also venture that Ali G is about Cypriots in North London c. 1990s rather than blacks.
