My simple proposal is that we try to give payroll tax refunds based on number of children. This is simultaneously:
1) Applies to everyone with a job, and thus can gain broad support.
2) Scales with income and results in much greater incentives for high earners then low earners.
3) Promotes work and marriage.
4) Is simply actuarially sound, rationalizes our retirement systems and ends the massive subsidies for low fertility professionals.
This would result in the $500k/kid for smart successful couples, but actually have some possibility of gaining popular support. If the price is that we have to pay employed plebs a few grand per year per kid to get it over the finish line so be it.

My simple proposal is that we try to give payroll tax refunds based on number of children. This is simultaneously:
1) Applies to everyone with a job, and thus can gain broad support.
2) Scales with income and results in much greater incentives for high earners then low earners.
3) Promotes work and marriage.
4) Is simply actuarially sound, rationalizes our retirement systems and ends the massive subsidies for low fertility professionals.
This would result in the $500k/kid for smart successful couples, but actually have some possibility of gaining popular support. If the price is that we have to pay employed plebs a few grand per year per kid to get it over the finish line so be it.
This is BTW how Israel does it at a slightly smaller scale. They pay 2.5x at exchange rate and 4x at gdp per capita in financial assistance compared to the USA to families and many of the payments scale with income and favor professional couples.
